Essaouira on a shared seat, start to finish
Ten to eleven hours, Marrakech to the Atlantic and back, in a shared minibus with daily departures. Here is how the day actually runs.
The minibus does the hotel rounds early and heads west. The road out of Marrakech flattens into argan country, and there is a stop at a cooperative run by local women where the oil is still pressed by hand — you can watch, buy if you want to, and nobody minds if you do not. Essaouira is two and a half to three hours from the city: a walled town on the Atlantic with blue fishing boats in the harbour, ramparts you can walk along, and a wind that never quite stops. You get about four hours there on your own. Most people walk the medina, eat grilled fish by the boats and come back along the sea wall. The minibus leaves in the late afternoon and you are back in Marrakech between seven and eight.
Essaouira is windy all year, so bring a light jacket even in August — the best time to visit Marrakech guide has the weather month by month. If you would rather set your own hours, the private Essaouira day trip runs the same route with your own driver. Or tell us what you want on the custom tour page and we build the day around you.
