2 Nights in Merzouga: Why the Extra Sahara Night Changes the Trip
MAby marrakeshexpresstour 4 min read

A 3-day Sahara tour with both nights spent in Merzouga instead of one — a full day for Khamlia village, nomadic families and the dunes, not just a rushed overnight.
Day one, crossing into another Morocco
The route out of Marrakech follows the same opening as our standard round-trip Sahara tour — the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka, Aït Benhaddou’s earthen kasbahs, and on through Todra Gorge’s limestone walls — before arriving at Merzouga in time for sunset. A camel trek carries you into Erg Chebbi’s dunes as the light turns from gold to red, ending at a luxury desert camp with a private en-suite tent rather than a shared, basic setup.
Day two, the day most tours skip entirely
This is what actually separates this tour from a standard one-night version: an entire day based in Merzouga rather than driving straight back out the next morning. After sunrise over the dunes, the day opens up into 4×4 exploration of the surrounding desert — Khamlia village, home to a Gnawa musical tradition with roots going back generations, where an afternoon stop often means hearing live music performed by the families who’ve kept it going. From there, visits to nomadic families still living semi-traditionally near the dunes, and a stop at the abandoned M’Fis mining area, a stark contrast to the dunes themselves. Panoramic viewpoints over Erg Chebbi round out the afternoon, with time built in to actually relax by the pool back at the hotel rather than rushing to the next stop — something a single-night tour never has room for.
Accommodation for this second night switches from the desert camp to a selected luxury hotel in Merzouga itself, a deliberate change of pace after a night under canvas.
Day three, the road back
The return route takes the Draa Valley rather than retracing Day 1 exactly, with stops at Agdz and Ouarzazate before the final crossing of the High Atlas back into Marrakech. Across the full three days, the loop covers roughly 1,000km — worth knowing going in, since it’s a genuinely different scale of trip from a quick desert overnight.
Why two nights instead of one
A standard 1-night Sahara tour means arriving at sunset, sleeping, watching sunrise, and leaving — the desert becomes a single overnight stop on a longer loop rather than a destination in its own right. Two nights turns that around: a full uninterrupted day to actually explore Merzouga and its surroundings rather than just passing through. If a single night is all your schedule allows, our standard round-trip Sahara tour covers the same core dunes-and-camp experience in the same three days.
What makes the stay itself comfortable
The desert camp night is genuine glamping rather than roughing it — a private en-suite tent rather than a shared setup, proper bedding, and a real bathroom rather than communal facilities. The second night’s hotel adds a pool and hot shower back into the mix, which after a full day of 4×4 exploring in desert heat is more than a nice-to-have.
Who this tour suits best
This is the better fit if the Sahara itself is the point of your trip rather than one stop among several — travelers who want real time in Merzouga rather than a photo-and-sleep stopover, or anyone who’s done a rushed 1-night desert tour before and wished they’d had more time. It’s a private tour throughout, so pace and stops can be adjusted around what you actually want from the day, similar to the flexibility described in our guide to choosing between tour formats.
Booking your two nights in the Sahara
Since every stop, pace and timing on this route can be personalized, it’s worth reaching out directly with any specific interests — more time with a nomadic family, a different pace on Day 2, or adjustments around a specific date. Our Marrakech to Merzouga distance guide is a useful read beforehand if you want a clearer sense of what the driving itself involves.
