Fez to Merzouga desert 2-day tour via the High Atlas mountains
Embark on a charming 2-day desert from Fez to Merzouga, venturing through Ifrane and Azrou’s lush landscapes with Barbary macaques, then immersing in the scenic Ziz Valley. Reach Erfoud on the Sahara’s edge, exploring local markets before arriving at the mesmerizing Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. Experience a magical sunset camel trek into the dunes, followed by a night in a traditional desert camp under star-lit skies, embracing Berber hospitality.
Day two unfolds with a sunrise spectacle, a camel trek back to Merzouga, and a visit to Rissani’s historic town and traditional market. As you return to Fez, the journey showcases the contrast from desert serenity to fertile regions, promising a whirlwind of cultural encounters and natural wonders.
Departure Time : 7:30 AM
We will pick you up at 8 am from your hotel/riad and will leave Fes to Merzouga traveling towards Ifran, a beautiful mountain village, referred to as “the Switzerland of Morocco” and then on to Midelt. During this journey you’ll experience glimpses of the Middle Atlas and Higher Atlas mountains.
Stopping at Azrou, a Berber village in the middle of the famous cedar forest – the largest in Morocco – where you may well sight Barbary apes. After some time within the forest, your journey continues to Midelt along the magnificent hills and mountains of the Atlas, after Midelt town you will be traveling through the fascinating Tiz Ntalghamt pass and the Ziz Gorge, taking in views of the High Atlas plateau, you’ll notice how the scenery changes to reveal hints of the desert as you approach the city of Errachidia, here you will have lunch and enjoy the Berber hospitality. Afterward, you will travel along the luxuriant Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views along the way to Erfoud and Rissani.
Arrive at Merzouga in the afternoon. You’ll be welcomed with a glass of mint tea before your camel ride, guided by an experienced camel man to explore the golden sand sea of Merzouga. Dinner in front of the tent where you will spend the night.
You will wake up to enjoy the sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi, possibly the best moment of the Merzouga desert.
Make your way after breakfast to Fes through the Ziz valley and the cedar forest of Azrou. There you will see a colony of monkeys along the road which will keep you amused.
You will have plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs as you will stop for coffee, lunch, photographs, and more coffee as you travel through these forests, valleys, and mountains. We will reach the Switzerland of Morocco which is Ifrane city. Drop off at your Riad / Hotel at around 6 PM in Fes.
