Overview

The whole country in five days, ocean to dunes to Marrakech

Five days that cross the whole country, from the Atlantic to the Sahara and over the High Atlas into Marrakech. You start in Casablanca at the Hassan II Mosque, built out over the ocean, then Rabat and its Kasbah of the Udayas, then north into the Rif to spend the first night in Chefchaouen, where every wall is painted blue. Day two comes back down through Volubilis or Meknes to Fes. Day three is the long one — Ifrane and the cedar forest, the Ziz Valley, and then Merzouga, a camel at sunset and a night in a tent in the dunes. Day four climbs back out through Todra Gorge, the Valley of Roses and Aït Benhaddou, and day five crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass into Marrakech. Your own vehicle and driver the whole way, and the itinerary bends if you want it to.

  • The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, out over the Atlantic
  • Rabat: the Hassan Tower and the Kasbah of the Udayas
  • A night in Chefchaouen, the blue city in the Rif mountains
  • Optional stop at Volubilis or Meknes on the way to Fes
  • Ifrane and the cedar forest, with its Barbary macaques
  • The Ziz Valley: palm groves, canyons and oasis views
  • A sunset camel trek over the Erg Chebbi dunes, and a night in the camp
  • Todra Gorge, the Valley of Roses and Aït Benhaddou
  • The Tizi n’Tichka pass over the High Atlas into Marrakech

Le récit complet

Five days, written out in full

The whole route told the way it actually happens — the mosque on the water, the blue streets of Chefchaouen, the cedar forest, one night in the dunes, and the pass into Marrakech.

You start on the Atlantic, at the Hassan II Mosque — one of the largest in the world, and built out over the water itself. From there the road runs down the coast to Rabat, the capital, for the Hassan Tower and the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river mouth. Then the country turns green and vertical: north into the Rif mountains, climbing all afternoon, until Chefchaouen appears on the hillside with every wall in its medina painted blue. Dinner and the first night are there, in the quietest town on the whole route.

The morning belongs to Chefchaouen — the medina, the artisan shops, the viewpoints above the roofs — and you leave when you are ready. On the way south there are two optional stops, and you can take either, both or neither: Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, where the mosaics are still in the floors, and Meknes, an imperial city known for its monumental gates. You reach Fes in the afternoon and settle into a riad in the old town.

This is the long day, and the one where the landscape changes most. You climb into the Middle Atlas through forest and Berber villages, stop at Ifrane — a town that looks like it was lifted out of the Alps — and then at the cedar forest just outside it, where Barbary macaques come down to the roadside. After that the land dries out: the Ziz Valley runs south in one long green line of palms between canyon walls, and at the end of it is Merzouga. You ride a camel out into the Erg Chebbi dunes for about an hour, arrive for the sunset, and sleep in a private tent in the camp.

You wake early for the sunrise — the first light coming across the dunes is the reason people set an alarm in the desert. Then the road turns west and climbs out of the Sahara through Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls close to a few hundred metres apart above your head. The afternoon runs through the Valley of Roses and the kasbahs around Ouarzazate, and ends at Aït Benhaddou, the fortified village of earth and straw that half the films set in the desert have used as a backdrop. The night is near Aït Benhaddou or in Ouarzazate.

One mountain range left. The road climbs the Tizi n’Tichka, the highest pass in Morocco open to traffic, in a long series of switchbacks with Berber villages on the slopes and the view opening further at every turn. On the far side it drops into the Haouz plain and runs straight into Marrakech. Your driver takes you to your hotel or riad, or to Menara Airport if you are flying out the same day.

Every day of this trip is private, so the route is a starting point and not a rule: take both optional stops or neither, add a day in Fes, or finish at the airport instead of your riad. If you would rather start and finish in Marrakech, there is the 3-day Sahara tour with two nights in Merzouga, and if you want the whole country with more time in it, look at the 6-day Casablanca to Marrakech tour.

Chefchaouen was more beautiful than I imagined

“Ce circuit entre Casablanca et Marrakech a été une expérience exceptionnelle. Chefchaouen était encore plus belle que je l’imaginais, et passer une nuit dans le désert après une balade à dos de chameau au coucher du soleil restera un souvenir inoubliable. Le programme était parfaitement équilibré entre culture, paysages et détente.”
