Is this tour for you?

Right for most travellers, wrong for a few

A good fit if…

  • You want the Sahara between Fes and Marrakech, with no road driven twice
  • You would rather set the pace yourself than follow a group timetable
  • You are a couple, a family or a small group of friends travelling together
  • You have three days and want the most of Morocco you can fit into them
  • You travel with children or older parents who need extra stops along the way
  • You want to stop for photos wherever the light is good, not where the schedule says

Think twice if…

  • You need to finish back in Marrakech — the round trip from Marrakech suits you better
  • Your flight out of Marrakech leaves before 21:00 on day 3
  • You dislike long drives — expect five to seven hours on the road each day
  • You are looking for the cheapest way to the desert — the shared departure costs less
  • You want two nights in the Sahara — ask us for the four-day version instead

The full story

Fes to Marrakech, the desert way

If your trip starts in Fes and ends in Marrakech, this is the way to join the two cities. Instead of the motorway or a flight, you go south: over the Middle Atlas through the cedar forest at Azrou, down the Ziz Valley to the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night in the desert, then west along the Todra and Dades gorges and over the Tizi n'Tichka pass into Marrakech. It covers about 1,150 km in three days, in a private 4×4 with your own driver-guide, and it leaves on whatever date you choose. Not sure three days is enough? How many days do you need in Morocco compares the routes.

The longest driving day, and the one that changes the most. You leave Fes early
and climb into the Middle Atlas, where the air turns cool and the cedar forest
around Azrou closes over the road — this is where the wild Barbary macaques
live. Lunch in Midelt, between the two Atlas ranges, then the descent: the
plateau gives way to the Ziz Valley, a 20 km ribbon of palm trees cut into red
rock. By late afternoon the last ksour of Erfoud are behind you and the Erg
Chebbi dunes appear on the horizon, rising up to 150 metres. Your camel caravan
is waiting at the foot of them, and you ride in as the sun goes down. Dinner,
Berber drums and a fire at the camp.

Sunrise over the dunes is worth the early start — the sand goes from grey to
deep orange in about fifteen minutes. After breakfast at the camp you head west
through Rissani, the old caravan town that was the capital of the Tafilalet,
then across the black hammada towards Tinghir. The palm grove there runs for
30 km along the river, and just behind it the road enters the Todra Gorge, where
limestone walls 300 metres high narrow to barely 10 metres apart. You finish the
day in the Dades Valley, driving the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, with the night
in a hotel looking out over the gorge.

The last day is the cinematic one. You follow the Valley of Roses, where the
Damask rose harvest fills the air every May, then reach Ouarzazate, Morocco's
film capital and home to Atlas Studios. Thirty kilometres on stands Aït Ben
Haddou, the fortified earthen village on the UNESCO list since 1987 — you will
recognise it from Gladiator and Game of Thrones, and you cross the river and
climb to the granary at the top for the view over the whole ksar. Then the High
Atlas: the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, switchback after switchback, until the
Haouz plain opens up and Marrakech appears below. Drop-off at your riad or the
airport.

Nights in the desert drop to around 5 °C from November to March, and there can be snow at Ifrane in winter, so pack a warm layer — our Morocco desert packing list covers the rest, and the best time to visit Marrakech guide has the weather month by month. If you would rather share the cost, the shared Fes to Marrakech 3-day tour follows the same road from €100. If you need to finish back in Marrakech, take the private Marrakech to Merzouga round trip instead. Or tell us your dates on the custom tour page and we plan the route around you.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience – Thank You, Hakim!

“The highlight was definitely the Sahara Desert in Merzouga a truly magical experience. Along the way, we enjoyed beautiful landscapes, interesting stops, and great explanations about Moroccan culture and history Hakim went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for us. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for an authentic and enjoyable desert tour in Morocco”

The route

Yes. The vehicle, the driver and the itinerary are yours alone.

No other travellers join, there are no extra pickups, and there is no fixed
departure day — you choose the date.

Your hotel, riad or Fès–Saïs Airport in Fes, and anywhere in Marrakech.

Pick-up is in the morning; you choose the hour. Drop-off is at your Marrakech hotel,
riad or Menara Airport, around 18:00 on day 3 — so book no flight that evening.

Day 1 crosses the Middle Atlas to the dunes, day 2 the gorges, day 3 the kasbahs.

Day 1: Ifrane at 1,665 m, the Azrou cedar forest and its Barbary macaques, lunch in
Midelt, the Ziz Valley and Erfoud, then the camel ride into Erg Chebbi at sunset.
Day 2: sunrise on the dunes, Rissani, lunch in Tinghir, Todra Gorge and the Dades
Valley.
Day 3: the Valley of Roses, Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou and the Tizi n'Tichka
pass at 2,260 m.

About 1,150 km over three days, one way, with no road driven twice.

Day 1 is the longest stretch. Because the tour is private, you can ask to stop
whenever something is worth a photo.

Desert & camp

No — the nights before and after the tour are yours to book.

The price covers the two nights on the road. Tell us where you are staying in Fes
and we collect you there; tell us where you are going in Marrakech and we drop you
at the door.

A private tent with a real bed, out in the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga.

Dinner, Gnawa drums and a fire under the stars. Showers are shared, or en-suite if
you take the luxury tent. Electricity runs in the evening only and the phone signal
is weak — which is rather the point.

Yes. A 4×4 takes you to the camp instead, at no extra charge.

The ride is about an hour into the dunes at sunset. Plenty of travellers ride in and
come back by 4×4 the next morning. Nothing changes in the price either way.

Practical

Yes. Children get 5% off the adult rate and travel in their own seat.

Child seats are free on request — just tell us when you book. The camp has tents
that take a family together.

A warm layer, shoes you can walk in, and a small overnight bag for the camp.

Desert nights drop to around 5 °C from November to March, and snow at Ifrane is
normal from December to March. Bring dirhams in cash, as cards are not taken at most
stops, and a power bank — camp electricity is evenings only.
