How to Visit the Sahara Desert from Marrakech: Routes & Camps

Merzouga or Chigaga, shared or private, standard camp or luxury — how to actually choose your Sahara trip from Marrakech, plus routes and timing.

Sunset over the dunes, camel rides at dusk, a desert camp under more stars than you’ve likely seen — the Sahara is worth the trip, but it takes real planning: it’s not a day trip from Marrakech.

How far is the Sahara from Marrakech?

Around 9-10 hours by road to Merzouga, depending on stops and traffic through the mountains — which is exactly why every worthwhile itinerary breaks the drive into 2-3 days rather than rushing it in one.

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) or the remote option (Erg Chigaga)?

Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is Morocco’s most visited Sahara destination — tall dunes, established luxury camps, and the most reliable choice for first-timers, families, and anyone who wants both comfort and easy logistics. All of our standard desert tours route here.

Erg Chigaga is quieter and more remote, popular with travelers who specifically want to get away from other camps. It’s not a fixed package we offer as a standard itinerary — if this is what you’re after, tell us in a custom tour request and we’ll arrange it directly.

How many days do you need?

Three days is the realistic minimum for a comfortable trip to Merzouga and back, with time to properly see the route along the way rather than just transit through it.

  • Shared 3-day tour, Marrakech to Merzouga — the most economical option, small group. See this tour.
  • Private 3-day luxury tour, Marrakech to Merzouga — your own vehicle and guide, upgraded camp. See this tour.
  • Marrakech to Fes (or Fes to Marrakech) via the Sahara — the way to combine the desert with the north instead of doubling back. See this tour.
  • Marrakech to Agadir via the Sahara — for combining the desert with a coastal finish. See this tour.

What you’ll see along the way

The Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass, the UNESCO kasbah at Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, and Todra Gorge — the drive itself is a large part of why this needs 3 days, not 1.

The camel ride and the night in camp

What to pack

Comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, light daytime clothing, a warm layer for the evening (desert nights get cold, especially November through February — see our seasonal guide), a power bank, and a small overnight bag — leave the rest of your luggage at your Marrakech riad if your tour offers that.

Best time to go

October through April is the comfortable window. Summer regularly exceeds 40°C (104°F) in the desert — not impossible, but plan for very early starts and shaded rest during the hottest hours if that’s your only option.
