Marrakech to the dunes, and home by the same pass
If Marrakech is where your trip begins and ends, this is how you reach the Sahara without unpacking in a second city. You climb the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, sleep above the Dades gorge, walk into Todra, and ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a night in a luxury camp at Merzouga. You leave Marrakech early and the city is gone within twenty minutes. The road
climbs into the High Atlas and keeps climbing, switchback after switchback, to the
Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m — the highest road in Morocco. On the far side the
green goes out of the landscape and the earth turns red. Aït Ben Haddou appears
around a bend: a fortified village of packed earth, UNESCO-listed since 1987, where
Gladiator and Game of Thrones were filmed. You cross the river and climb to the
granary at the top. Ouarzazate and its studios come next, then the Valley of Roses,
and the day ends above the Dades gorge with the switchbacks right behind the riad.
A short drive and the walls close in: Todra Gorge, 300 metres of limestone narrowing
to barely ten metres apart, with a stream running down the middle and climbers on
the rock above. Tinghir's palm grove runs thirty kilometres along the river below
the old kasbahs. Then the land flattens and empties — black hammada, the occasional
ksar, the fossil town of Erfoud — until the Erg Chebbi dunes rise out of nothing on
the horizon, 150 metres of them. Your camels are waiting at the foot. You ride in as
the light goes orange, try the sandboards on the slope behind camp, and eat under
the stars with the drums going.
Climb the nearest dune for first light over the Sahara. Back out of the dunes by camel, or by 4×4 if you prefer. Berber bread, olive oil and mint tea before you leave. The old caravan capital of the Tafilalet and its covered souk. A stop near Ouarzazate, roughly halfway back. Back over the High Atlas, this time coming down into Marrakech. Your riad, hotel or Menara Airport — wherever you need.
