About this trip

An hour from Marrakech, and 1,500 m above it

Seven hours, about 130 km of road, and a valley that starts forty minutes outside
Marrakech. You stop at a Berber women's argan cooperative, drink mint tea in a
village house, and follow the Ourika river up into the High Atlas to Setti Fatma,
where seven waterfalls step down the mountainside. The walk to the first one takes
about forty minutes over rock and water — or you can stay by the river instead.
Lunch is served on a terrace over the water, and you are back in Marrakech by late
afternoon.

  • Private vehicle and driver-guide — just your party, no strangers
  • The Setti Fatma waterfalls, seven of them stepping down the mountain
  • A Berber women's argan cooperative, where the oil is still ground by hand
  • Mint tea in a village house, with the family who lives in it
  • Lunch on a terrace over the Ourika river, included in the price
  • Forty minutes from Marrakech, and about 10 °C cooler
  • The walk to the waterfalls is optional — stay by the river if you prefer
  • Back in the city by late afternoon, so the evening is still yours

Is this trip for you?

The easiest day out of Marrakech — but not for everyone

A good fit if…

  • You want mountains and green without giving up a whole day
  • Marrakech has worn you out and you want air that is 10 °C cooler
  • You are travelling with children — the river is the whole day for them
  • You would rather set your own pace than follow a group of twenty
  • You want a real Berber village, not a staged one
  • It is your first day in Morocco and you want something gentle

Think twice if…

  • You are looking for the cheapest way to the Atlas — the shared trip costs less
  • You want serious hiking — the waterfall walk is forty minutes, not a trek
  • You expect the valley to be empty: Setti Fatma is busy at weekends
  • You cannot manage uneven rock and stepping stones — stay by the river instead
  • You want the desert — Ourika is the Atlas, three hours from the nearest dune

The full story

Forty minutes from Marrakech, a different country

The Ourika is the closest the High Atlas comes to Marrakech — forty minutes of road and the air is already ten degrees cooler. This private day trip follows the river up the valley: a Berber women's argan cooperative, mint tea in a village house, and Setti Fatma, where seven waterfalls step down the mountainside. The walk to the first one takes about forty minutes over rock and stepping stones, and it is entirely optional — plenty of people stay by the river instead. Lunch is a tagine on a terrace over the water, and it is included. You are back in Marrakech by late afternoon, in your own vehicle with your own driver, on whatever date you choose.

The valley starts forty minutes out of Marrakech and the temperature drops with
every kilometre. First stop is a Berber women's argan cooperative, where the nuts
are still cracked between two stones and the oil comes out by hand — you can taste
it, and nobody pushes you to buy. Then mint tea on the roof of a village house, with
the family who lives in it. The road follows the Ourika river up into the High Atlas
until it runs out at Setti Fatma, where seven waterfalls step down the mountainside.
The walk to the first one takes about forty minutes, over rock and across the stream
on stepping stones — a scramble, not a hike, and entirely optional. Lunch is a
tagine on a terrace built out over the water. By late afternoon you are back in
Marrakech with the evening still ahead of you.

The valley runs about 10 °C cooler than the city, so bring a layer from November to March — the best time to visit Marrakech guide has the weather month by month. In summer bring swimwear: the river is the point. If you would rather share the cost, the shared Ourika Valley day trip follows the same road. Want the coast instead? Peaceful, far from Marrakech

Yes. The vehicle, the driver and the timing are yours alone.
No other travellers join, and there is no fixed departure — you pick the hour.

About seven to eight hours, door to door.
Pickup between 07:00 and 09:00, back in Marrakech by late afternoon. Because the
trip is private, you can leave earlier or stay longer.

It is a forty-minute scramble, not a hike — and it is optional.
The path crosses the stream on stepping stones and climbs over rock. Plenty of
travellers skip it and sit by the river with their feet in the water instead.

A Berber women's argan cooperative, a village house, and the river all the way up.
At the co-op the nuts are still cracked between two stones. Then mint tea on a roof
with the family who lives there, and scenic stops wherever the valley opens up.

We recommend comfortable clothing, walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light jacket during cooler months. If you plan to enjoy the river in summer, bring swimwear and a towel.

About 65 km each way — roughly forty minutes to the valley, an hour to Setti Fatma.

Practical

Yes — a tagine on a terrace over the river at Setti Fatma.
Drinks are extra. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free are available if you tell us
when you book.

Yes, and the river is usually their favourite part of the trip.
Children pay 95% of the adult rate and child seats are free on request. The
waterfall walk is optional, so nobody has to do it.

Shoes you can walk in, and a layer — the valley runs about 10 °C cooler than Marrakech.
In summer bring swimwear and a towel if you want the river. In winter a proper
jacket, as the mountain air bites once the sun drops behind the ridge.
