Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech: 3 Days to Merzouga and Back
MApar marrakeshexpresstour 4 min de lecture

A 3-day round-trip Sahara tour from Marrakech: Aït Benhaddou, Todra Gorge, a night camel-trekking into Erg Chebbi's dunes, and back to Marrakech by day three.
A round trip, not a one-way transfer
If you’re flying in and out of Marrakech, this is the version of the Sahara route built for you — three days out to Merzouga’s dunes and three days’ worth of landscape on the way back, ending exactly where you started rather than in Fes. No need to arrange a separate return flight or an extra leg back across the country.
Day 1: Marrakech to the desert’s edge
Departure is typically early morning, since the Tizi n’Tichka pass — the High Atlas crossing at roughly 2,260m — is best done before midday. The road climbs through Berber villages and, in winter and early spring, genuinely snow-capped peaks, a contrast most first-time visitors don’t expect from a “desert tour.”
Aït Benhaddou follows the descent from the pass — a fortified earthen ksar along the old caravan route, worth an hour walking through rather than just photographing from the road. From there the route continues through Ouarzazate and into Dades Valley, known locally as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs for the density of fortified villages along its length. The first night is spent at the edge of the valley, roughly 7-8 hours of driving and stops behind you.
Day 2: Into the dunes
The route passes through Todra Gorge on the way south — limestone cliff walls rising close to 300 meters on either side of a canyon that narrows to roughly 10 meters at its tightest point. A short walk along the canyon floor (30-45 minutes) is worth the stop before continuing toward Merzouga, typically arriving by mid-to-late afternoon.
Day 3: Sunrise and the road home
A pre-dawn wake-up gets you back out onto the dunes for sunrise — the desert’s temperature swing overnight means the walk out is worth a warm layer even if the day ahead will be hot. Breakfast is back at camp before the return drive begins.
Private or shared, which to choose
A private tour means your own vehicle and guide, full control over pace and stops, and the flexibility to linger somewhere that catches your eye. A shared tour runs the same route at a lower price point, in a small group, on a fixed schedule. Neither is objectively better — it depends on whether flexibility or budget matters more for this particular trip. Our private vs. shared desert tour guide breaks down the tradeoff in more detail if you’re undecided.
What to pack
- Comfortable walking shoes for Todra Gorge and Aït Benhaddou
- Light layers for daytime, plus a genuinely warm layer for the desert night — colder than most first-timers expect
- A small overnight bag packed separately, since the desert camp doesn’t need your full luggage
- Sun protection for the open dune stretches
- A headlamp or phone flashlight for the pre-dawn walk out to watch sunrise
How this compares to the one-way route
If your trip includes both Marrakech and Fes anyway, the one-way version of this route — ending in Fes instead of looping back — covers similar desert scenery without doubling back on the same road twice. Our Marrakech to Fes 3-day route covers that version in full. This round-trip page is the better fit if Marrakech is both your start and end point.
