8 Best Museums in Marrakech: What to See & How to Plan Your Visit

From the Yves Saint Laurent Museum to Amazigh heritage at Dar Si Said — the 8 best museums in Marrakech and how to plan your visit around them.

Marrakech isn’t usually the first city people associate with museums — the medina and the souks tend to get all the attention. But between a fashion legend’s design archive, a Moroccan-arts palace with carved cedar ceilings, and a photography house built to look exactly like the images it displays, there’s a genuinely strong museum scene here if you know where to look. These 8 are the ones worth your time, with a note on who each one actually suits.

1. Yves Saint Laurent Museum Marrakech

Right next to Jardin Majorelle — the garden YSL bought and restored — this museum holds his sketches, fashion pieces and personal photographs, tracing how deeply Morocco shaped his design work. It’s the most-visited museum on this list for a reason, and since it sits directly beside the garden, pair the two in one visit rather than two separate trips. Our Marrakech gardens guide has the full plan for that combined stop, including the Berber Museum inside the Majorelle grounds itself.

2. Dar Si Said Museum (Museum of Moroccan Arts)

Often ranked among the finest museums in the country — Berber jewelry, hand-knotted carpets, wood carvings and musical instruments, set inside a 19th-century palace with some of the best carved cedar ceilings in the city. If you’re also visiting the souks, this is the best primer beforehand: a huge amount of what’s on display here is still made by hand a few streets away, in the same workshops we cover in our craft traditions guide.

3. Museum of Marrakech

Housed in a restored 19th-century palace with a striking central courtyard of colorful zellige tilework, this museum covers historic artifacts, ceramics, textiles and calligraphy. The courtyard alone — with its giant Murano glass chandelier — is worth the entry price even if you rush the rest.

4. La Maison de la Photographie

Thousands of historic photographs of Morocco dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s, in a beautifully restored riad. The rooftop café at the top has one of the best Medina views in the city — go in the late morning for the photos, then stay for coffee with the view.

5. MACMA — Museum of Art and Culture of Marrakech

The modern counterpoint to the rest of this list: contemporary Moroccan painting, sculpture, photography and mixed-media work alongside international exhibitions. Good for a change of pace after several stops of historic architecture and traditional crafts.

6. Le musée orientaliste de Marrakech

Paintings and artwork by European artists who traveled to Morocco and North Africa and were captivated by what they found — a specific, slightly unusual angle on how the country has been seen from the outside over the last two centuries.

7. Le musée de la Femme de Marrakech

Dedicated to Moroccan women’s contributions across literature, politics, education, craftsmanship and art — a perspective that’s genuinely missing from most of the standard sightseeing circuit, and worth prioritizing if you only have time for two or three museums.

8. Le musée berbère

Located inside Jardin Majorelle itself, this small but well-curated museum covers Amazigh (Berber) heritage — traditional clothing, jewelry, musical instruments and ceremonial objects. Since it’s inside the garden grounds, there’s no reason to visit Majorelle without stepping in here too.

Which museum should you visit?

  • Only time for one: Yves Saint Laurent Museum, paired with Jardin Majorelle next door.
  • Interested in traditional Moroccan craft: Dar Si Said, then walk the souks the same afternoon.
  • Traveling with kids: Museum of Marrakech’s courtyard and Maison de la Photographie’s rooftop are the most visually engaging for younger visitors.
  • Have a full day for museums: Dar Si Said in the morning, Maison de la Photographie around midday (stop for the rooftop café), then Jardin Majorelle, the Berber Museum and the YSL Museum together in the late afternoon.

Most of these sit close enough together in and around the Medina and Gueliz that you can comfortably combine three to five in a single day. If you’d rather have the whole day planned for you — museums, gardens and the souks worked into one route — our custom tour can build it around exactly the museums you care about.
