About this trip

Three hours west, and the Atlantic opens up

Ten hours, about 350 km, and a road that runs out of mountains and into the sea.
Halfway there the argan trees start, and so do the goats that climb them. You stop
at a Berber women's cooperative where the oil is still ground by hand, then the land
flattens, the air turns salty, and Essaouira appears: white walls, blue shutters, a
UNESCO medina and a harbour full of blue boats. Lunch is grilled fish on the quay,
chosen off the ice and cooked in front of you. Then the Skala ramparts, the thuya
wood workshops, and as much beach as you want before the drive home.

  • Private vehicle and driver-guide — just your party, no strangers
  • Essaouira's medina, UNESCO listed since 2001
  • Lunch on the quay — grilled fish picked off the ice, included in the price
  • The goats that climb the argan trees, on the road out
  • A Berber women's argan cooperative, where the oil is still ground by hand
  • The Skala de la Ville ramparts, where Orson Welles filmed Othello
  • The fishing port and its fleet of blue boats
  • Thuya wood workshops — Essaouira's own craft, found nowhere else

Is this trip for you?

The best day out of Marrakech — if you don't mind the drive

Fait pour vous si…

  • You want the ocean, and Marrakech is three hours from it
  • You would rather spend the afternoon wandering than following a schedule
  • You are travelling with children — the port and the beach fill the day for them
  • You want a real craft town: thuya wood is made here and almost nowhere else
  • Seafood on the quay sounds better than a tagine inland
  • You have one spare day and want it to feel like a different country

À éviter si…

  • Five to six hours of the day are spent in the car — there is no way around it
  • You are looking for the cheapest way to the coast — the shared trip costs less
  • You want to swim: the Atlantic here is cold and the wind is constant
  • You want mountains instead — the Ourika Valley is forty minutes away, not three hours
  • You have an evening flight: you are back in Marrakech early evening, not before

Le récit complet

Mountains behind you, the Atlantic ahead

Essaouira is 175 km west of Marrakech, and the road there is half the reason to go: the Haouz plain, then the argan belt, then the goats standing in the trees. This private day trip gives you the drive, a Berber women's argan cooperative, and then as long as you want in the town — the UNESCO medina, the Skala ramparts, the blue fishing port, the thuya wood workshops and eight kilometres of beach. Lunch is grilled fish on the quay and it is included. About 350 km there and back, ten to eleven hours door to door, in your own vehicle with your own driver, on whatever date you choose.

Marrakech thins out fast on the Essaouira road, and within an hour the Haouz plain
gives way to argan trees — low, thorny, and more often than not with four or five
goats standing in the branches eating the fruit. You stop at a Berber women's
cooperative where the nuts are still cracked between two stones, taste the oil, and
nobody pushes you to buy. Then the land flattens, the air turns salty, and Essaouira
arrives all at once: white walls, blue shutters, and a medina UNESCO-listed since
2001. You walk the Skala de la Ville, the sea ramparts lined with bronze cannon
where Orson Welles filmed Othello, then down to the port, where the blue fleet
unloads under a cloud of gulls. Lunch is whatever looked best on the ice, grilled on
the quay in front of you. The afternoon is yours — the thuya wood workshops, Place
Moulay Hassan, or eight kilometres of beach and the wind that made this town the
windsurfing capital of Morocco. You are back in Marrakech by evening.

Essaouira is cooler and windier than Marrakech all year — bring a layer even in August, and the best time to visit Marrakech donne la météo mois par mois. Si vous préférez partager les frais, le shared Essaouira day trip follows the same road. Want mountains instead? The Ourika Valley day trip is forty minutes from the city, or see all our day trips from Marrakech. Or tell us your dates on the custom tour page and we build the day around you.

The seafood lunch at the port

Yes. The vehicle, the driver and the timing are yours alone.
No other travellers join, and there is no fixed departure — you pick the hour.

About 2 hours 45 each way, 175 km in each direction.
The whole day runs ten to eleven hours door to door. It is a real drive — worth
knowing before you book.

The medina, the ramparts, the port and the beach — and most people want more time.
The medina has been UNESCO listed since 2001. The Skala de la Ville is the sea wall
with the row of bronze cannon, where Orson Welles filmed Othello. The fishing port
unloads the blue fleet every afternoon, and the beach runs eight kilometres south.

Usually, yes — they are on the road out, between Chichaoua and the coast.
They climb for the argan fruit. Your driver knows where they tend to be, and will
stop whenever you want the photograph.

Yes — grilled fish on the quay at the fishing port.
You pick it off the ice and it is cooked in front of you. Drinks are extra.
Vegetarian and vegan options are available if you tell us when you book.

Pratique

Yes, and the port is usually their favourite part of the day.
Children pay 95% of the adult rate and infant and child seats are free on request.

Shoes you can walk in, and a layer — Essaouira is cooler and windier than Marrakech.
That holds all year, August included. The medina is cobbled and uneven, and the port
is a walk from where the car stops.

You can, but the Atlantic here is cold and the wind rarely stops.
Most travellers walk the beach rather than swim. Bring swimwear in summer if you
want to try.
