Marrakech in Fall: Why September–November Is the Best Season to Visit

Fall is, in my opinion, the single best season to visit Marrakech — and I say that as someone who runs tours here year-round. From September through November, the brutal summer heat breaks, the crowds of spring thin out, and the whole region turns genuinely comfortable for the first time since April. Why fall works better than any other season

Daytime temperatures settle into the high 20s to low 30s°C by October, down from summer’s 38-40°C+, while evenings turn genuinely cool for the first time in months. Combine that with the post-summer drop in tourist numbers and you get the calmest, most comfortable window to see the city without fighting either heat or crowds.

1. The Sahara and Agafay, at their best

Fall is arguably the single best season for desert trips — summer’s daytime heat is gone but the nights haven’t turned as cold as deep winter, which makes camel trekking, desert camps and stargazing genuinely comfortable in both directions. Whether you’re doing a short Agafay overnight or the full multi-day Sahara route, this is when to book it.

2. Marrakech International Film Festival

Every autumn, Marrakech hosts one of North Africa’s biggest film festivals, drawing directors, actors and cinema fans from around the world. If your trip lines up with it, the city takes on a genuinely different energy — worth checking the exact dates before you book.

3. Harvest season, on your plate

Fall is harvest time across the region — olives, dates, pomegranates, figs, grapes and almonds all come into season, and you’ll see it in the tagines, salads and market stalls everywhere. It’s the best few months of the year to do a food-focused day in the city.

4. Bahia Palace, without the summer crowds

The palace’s carved stucco and painted ceilings look better in the softer autumn light than in summer’s harsh midday sun, and the cooler temperatures make the courtyards genuinely comfortable to linger in rather than rush through.

5. Hiking the High Atlas

Imlil, Ourika Valley, Oukaimeden and Toubkal National Park are all at their best in fall — clear air, comfortable temperatures, and none of the snow that closes higher routes in winter. 6. Ouzoud Waterfalls, at full flow

7. The gardens, in their second bloom

Jardin Majorelle, Menara Gardens, Le Jardin Secret and Agdal Gardens all get a second wind after the summer heat — worth a slower visit than you’d manage in July or August.

A 3-day fall itinerary

• Day 1: Medina and souks in the cool morning, Bahia Palace midday, Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset when the food stalls open.
• Day 2: Ouzoud Waterfalls or an Atlas Mountains day trip — both are at their best this season.
• Day 3: A short Agafay desert overnight, or the start of a longer Sahara route if you have more time.
