Three days, two nights and about 1,150 km, from Fes down to the Erg Chebbi dunes and west into Marrakech, in a shared minibus of up to seventeen seats. The minibus collects you from your hotel or riad in Fes and climbs straight into the Middle Atlas. Ifrane comes first, a town of pitched roofs and clean streets that Moroccans call Little Switzerland, then the cedar forest at Azrou, where the wild Barbary macaques come down to the roadside. Lunch is at Midelt, between the two ranges. After it the land dries out and the Ziz Valley opens below the road, a long green oasis cut into red rock. Erfoud, the fossil town, is the last stop before Merzouga, where the camels are waiting. The trek takes about an hour over the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, and the camp is on the other side: dinner, Berber drums and a fire.
Get up for the sunrise; it is the thing people remember. Breakfast at camp, then the camels carry you back out to Merzouga and the minibus takes over. The road runs west along the edge of the desert to Tinghir, with its palm groves and old villages stacked above them, and then into Todra Gorge, where the walls stand close together over the riverbed and the air stays cool. The day ends in the Dades Valley, with its strange rock formations, and a hotel night.
Breakfast, then the Rose Valley and its fields and villages, Ouarzazate and the film studios, and Aït Ben Haddou — the earthen ksar on the hillside, UNESCO listed and familiar from Gladiator and Game of Thrones. There is free time for lunch there. The last stretch is the Tizi n'Tichka, the highest road pass in the country, and the minibus comes down into Marrakech in the evening.
