10 Best Places to Visit in Morocco (2026 Guide, By Someone Who Lives Here)

From Marrakech's souks to Chefchaouen's blue streets and a night under Sahara stars — here are the 10 best places to visit in Morocco, with how many days to give each one.

1. Marrakech — the city everyone starts in

Most Morocco trips begin and end here, and for good reason: it’s the country’s most accessible base, with direct flights from most of Europe and easy road links to the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara and the coast. Give it at least 2-3 days — one for the Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks, one for Jardin Majorelle and the Ben Youssef Madrasa, and a half-day for the Bahia Palace. If you want the full breakdown of what to see and in what order, our Marrakech sightseeing guide and first-timers guide go street-by-street.

2. Sahara Desert (Merzouga) — non-negotiable if you have the time

This is the trip people remember years later. Merzouga, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is roughly 9-10 hours by road from Marrakech, which is why almost everyone does it as a 2-3 day loop with an overnight in a desert camp — camel trek in at sunset, dinner under the stars, sunrise back out. We cover the route options in detail in how to visit the Sahara from Marrakech, including which tour fits a shared budget trip versus a private luxury camp.

3. Chefchaouen — the blue city, and worth the detour

Tucked into the Rif Mountains in the north, Chefchaouen’s blue-washed medina is genuinely as photogenic in person as it looks online. It’s a full day’s drive from Marrakech (closer to Fes or Tangier), so it fits best into a longer, multi-city itinerary rather than a Marrakech-only trip. One full day is enough to wander the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint for sunset, and get lost in the blue alleys — which is really the point.

4. Fes — the medina that hasn’t changed in centuries

Fes el-Bali is the world’s largest car-free urban area and one of the best-preserved medieval medinas anywhere. The Chouara Tanneries, the Al-Qarawiyyin (one of the oldest universities in the world), and the maze of artisan souks reward at least 2 days — a guide is genuinely useful here, since the medina’s 9,000-plus alleyways aren’t built for casual wandering. Fes also anchors the northern end of several Sahara tour routes, including our 3-day Fes to Marrakech Sahara tour, so it’s an easy add-on rather than a separate trip.

5. Essaouira — the coast, done right

A relaxed fishing port turned windsurfing town, with a walled medina, fresh grilled seafood along the port, and a laid-back pace that’s a genuine contrast to Marrakech. It’s an easy 2.5-hour drive, which is why most visitors do it as a day trip rather than an overnight — our Excursion d'une journée à Essaouira covers exactly that route. If you want more beach time, our guide to beaches near Marrakech has other coastal options within reach.

6. Atlas Mountains — the easiest “wow” day trip from Marrakech

Snow-capped for much of the year and dotted with Berber villages, the High Atlas is close enough to Marrakech (under an hour to the foothills) that there’s no excuse to skip it. Hike to a waterfall, visit a traditional village, or simply take in the scenery — it’s one of the few destinations on this list you can genuinely do as a half-day. The Vallée de l’Ourika is the most popular route and pairs well with a sunset dinner stop.

7. Aït Benhaddou — the fortified village you’ve seen in films

9. Rabat — the quiet capital

Rabat is Morocco’s political capital and, compared to Marrakech or Fes, refreshingly uncrowded. The Kasbah of the Udayas, Hassan Tower, and the seafront make for an easy, relaxed day — a good stop if you’re driving the coast between Casablanca and Chefchaouen.

10. Agadir — if you just want a beach holiday

Agadir is Morocco’s purpose-built beach resort city — long sandy coastline, modern hotels, golf courses. It’s a different kind of trip than the rest of this list: less culture and medina, more sun loungers. If that’s what you’re after, our 3-day Marrakech to Agadir desert tour combines it with a Sahara loop on the way.

How many days do you actually need?

  • 5-7 days: Marrakech + the Sahara (Merzouga) via Aït Benhaddou, with a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira.
  • 10-14 days: Add Fes and Chefchaouen in the north, connected via one of the multi-day Sahara routes that link Marrakech and Fes.
  • 2-3 weeks: The full loop — Marrakech, Sahara, Fes, Chefchaouen, the coast (Essaouira or Agadir), and a stop in Casablanca or Rabat on the way out.

For exact timing by season, see our best time to visit guide. If you’d rather not piece the route together yourself, our custom tour builder lets you combine any of these stops into one itinerary.
