Visiting Marrakech in September: Oasis Festival, Weather & What to Do

September in Marrakech: cooling weather, the Oasis Festival, quieter souks, and the city's cultural calendar waking back up after summer.

September is the hinge month in Marrakech — summer’s worst heat is finally breaking, the peak-season crowds haven’t arrived yet, and the city’s cultural calendar starts waking back up. It’s part of our broader fall season guide, but September has enough going on of its own to plan around specifically — most notably one of the country’s biggest music festivals.

Why September works

Daytime temperatures are still warm — often into the low-to-mid 30s°C early in the month — but evenings cool down noticeably compared to July and August, and by late September the heat has broken enough to make full days of sightseeing comfortable again. Tourist numbers are also lower than peak summer and well below the spring rush, which means shorter queues at the major sites.

1. Shop the souks without the summer crush

September is one of the more comfortable months to actually spend time browsing rather than rushing through — leather goods, lanterns, spices and textiles, with enough breathing room to negotiate properly. If you want the full picture of which souk sells what, our craft traditions guide breaks the Medina down district by district.

2. Oasis Festival

One of Morocco’s best-known electronic and world-music festivals typically lands in September, drawing an international crowd to Marrakech’s outskirts for several days of desert-set stages and pool parties. If your trip can flex around it, it’s a genuinely different side of the city than the usual sightseeing circuit — check the current year’s exact dates before booking, since festival timing shifts slightly year to year.

3. Marrakech’s museums, at a comfortable pace

With the worst of the heat gone, September is a good window to actually spend real time in the city’s museums rather than ducking in for air conditioning. Our museums guide covers all 8 worth visiting and how to route them in a day.

4. The Mellah, Marrakech’s old Jewish quarter

A quieter, less-visited corner of the Medina with its own distinct history — narrow lanes, the old synagogue, and a noticeably different rhythm than the souks a few streets over. Worth a slow hour rather than a rushed stop.

5. Jemaa el-Fnaa after dark

September evenings are when the square really comes alive — food stalls, musicians, storytellers — without summer’s oppressive evening heat still lingering. Go hungry and stay past sunset.

Planning the rest of your trip

If your trip runs into October, our Marrakech in October guide picks up where this one leaves off — cooler still, and generally considered the most reliably comfortable month of the year here.
